Sister Academies: ASHAL and the Brazilian Academy of History and Literature

ASHAL and the Academia Brasileira de História e Literatura (ABHL) are sister academies. They share an intellectual tradition and a working conviction — that culture is a common heritage and a collective responsibility — while remaining independent institutions, each with its own membership, governance, and platform.

The relationship is practical as well as symbolic. Scholarly work produced in one language reaches readers in another; research on Brazilian history, literature, and art finds an audience in the United States, and American scholarship finds readers in Brazil. Translation is not an afterthought here: it is how the two societies serve each other.

Readers of ASHAL will find, among the Society's Academic Articles, studies originally written in Portuguese and published here in English — chosen not because they are Brazilian, but because they speak to anyone interested in how history, memory, and culture are made.
