Becoming a Founding Member of ASHAL is more than receiving a distinction. It is a place in the founding body of the Society.

Founding Members are the charter members of ASHAL — those whose admission helps establish the institution’s intellectual foundation, public identity, symbolic chairs, standards of recognition, and cultural presence.

This status is exclusive to ASHAL’s formative period. Once the founding phase closes, the Founding Member category will no longer be available.

To be admitted as a Founding Member is to have one’s name recorded among those who participated in the establishment of a new cultural institution devoted to History, Arts, Letters, and the life of culture and thought.

Admission as a Founding Member is subject to institutional review. The process is designed to preserve the dignity, credibility, and cultural purpose of ASHAL.

How the process works:

Initial review and eligibility screening;

Merit review by the ASHAL Admissions Committee;

If approved: signing of the Membership Agreement and payment of the Institutional Founding Fee;

Official registration, issuance of credentials, and public announcement of induction.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

ASHAL welcomes applications from individuals whose work demonstrates a meaningful cultural, intellectual, artistic, literary, historical, educational, or humanistic contribution.

Eligible applicants may include authors, scholars, educators, historians, artists, researchers, cultural practitioners, public intellectuals, and professionals whose trajectory reveals consistency, merit, ethical conduct, and commitment to culture.

Formal academic degrees may strengthen an application, but they are not the sole measure of distinction. ASHAL values verifiable achievement, intellectual seriousness, creative production, public contribution, ethical conduct, and the integrity of one’s work.

Applicants should be able to present evidence of their trajectory, such as publications, books, articles, lectures, exhibitions, artistic production, research, cultural projects, professional achievements, institutional participation, awards, public recognition, or other verifiable elements of contribution.

This process allows self-application. The interested individual may submit his or her own candidacy for institutional review.

 ASHAL exists to recognize and honor individuals whose work contributes to the preservation of memory, the advancement of knowledge, the dignity of letters, the vitality of the arts, and the cultural formation of society.

Its purpose is to bring together writers, scholars, artists, educators, historians, researchers, and cultural leaders in an institution devoted to distinction, legacy, intellectual seriousness, and the public value of culture.

Through its members, collegiate bodies, publications, recognitions, and public initiatives, ASHAL seeks to strengthen the circulation of ideas, works, research, artistic production, and cultural experience across national and disciplinary boundaries.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A FOUNDING MEMBER

A Founding Member of ASHAL is part of the first institutional generation of the Society.

This distinction carries symbolic, cultural, and institutional meaning. It identifies the member as one of the individuals admitted during ASHAL’s inaugural phase, before the closing of the founding cycle.

Founding Members help form the original body of the institution. Their names become part of ASHAL’s early history, its official registry, and its public record of recognition.

The Founding Member category is not a temporary title. It is a permanent institutional distinction conferred upon approved applicants admitted during the founding phase.

 ADMISSION STANDARDS

To preserve the dignity and credibility of ASHAL, all applications for Founding Member status are subject to institutional review.

Applicants are evaluated according to merit, trajectory, documentary integrity, ethical conduct, institutional alignment, and potential contribution to the cultural and intellectual body of the Society.

Accuracy of Information

The applicant affirms that all submitted information and attached documents are truthful, complete, and current.

Applications containing false information, material omission, fabricated credentials, misrepresentation of authorship, or unverifiable claims may be denied.

Evidence of Trajectory and Achievement

Applications should include verifiable elements of the applicant’s work, such as a curriculum vitae, biography, portfolio, published works, books, articles, awards, certificates, professional registrations, institutional links, press records, project documentation, or equivalent evidence.

ASHAL values consistency, seriousness, quality of work, and contribution within the applicant’s field.

Intellectual and Creative Integrity

ASHAL upholds standards of authorship, originality, intellectual honesty, and respect for cultural production.

Applications presenting evidence of plagiarism, fabrication, misappropriation of authorship, academic dishonesty, professional fraud, or serious ethical violation may be denied.

Alignment with ASHAL’s Mission

No. ASHAL values excellence and verifiable achievement above formal credentials. Academic degrees may strengthen an application, but they are not the sole criterion: consistency, quality, ethics, impact, and intellectual contribution are all considered.

What happens if my application is approved?

Upon approval, ASHAL formalizes membership through official institutional registration, issuance of credentials and a membership certificate, and a public profile on the ASHAL website identifying your academic affiliation and field of expertise. Public announcement and additional membership prerogatives follow institutional protocols.

What if my application is not approved?

In appropriate cases, ASHAL may advise the applicant to reapply in a future cycle with more comprehensive documentation or after further development of their portfolio or professional trajectory.

Am I required to participate in ASHAL activities after joining?

Membership is primarily an honorific and institutional distinction, with no mandatory participation obligations. Members are warmly encouraged to contribute to ASHAL's mission and engage with its collegiate bodies and initiatives, always in keeping with their own availability and professional commitments.

APPLICATION TERMS

FOUNDING MEMBER — ASHAL

I — Subject Matter

These terms govern the receipt, evaluation, and decision of applications for the Founding Member category of the American Society of History, Arts and Letters (ASHAL), a U.S.-based learned cultural society dedicated to recognizing distinguished contributions in the fields of History, Literature, the Arts, the Humanities, and the broader life of culture.

II — Eligibility

Applications are open to individuals with a meaningful contribution in areas aligned with ASHAL’s institutional mission, whose work demonstrates merit, consistency, ethical conduct, and adherence to the Society’s principles.

Eligibility may be established through intellectual, literary, artistic, historical, educational, cultural, academic, professional, or public contribution, provided that the applicant presents sufficient evidence for institutional review.

III — Application

Applicants may attach or reference documentation relevant to the review process, including a curriculum vitae, biography, portfolio, publications, books, articles, awards, certificates, institutional links, press records, project documentation, and other verifiable evidence of professional, intellectual, artistic, or cultural achievement.

The applicant is responsible for ensuring that all submitted information is truthful, complete, current, and verifiable.

IV — Review and Admissions Committee

Applications are reviewed by the ASHAL Admissions Committee and, where applicable, by other authorized institutional bodies, including councils, collegiate representatives, or editorial and academic committees.

The review may consider, among other factors:

trajectory;

achievement;

consistency of work;

quality of production;

relevance to ASHAL’s mission;

ethical conduct;

public contribution;

institutional alignment;

documentary integrity;

authorship and originality;

potential contribution to ASHAL’s membership body and collegiate bodies.

ASHAL may request supplementary documentation whenever necessary.

V — Process Steps

The admissions process includes the following steps:

receipt of application;

documentary screening;

merit review;

request for supplementary documentation, if required;

institutional decision — approval or denial;

formal notification by email;

signing of the Membership Agreement, if approved;

payment of the Institutional Founding Fee, upon approval;

official registration;

issuance of credentials;

VI — Results

The outcome of the application shall be:

Approved, when the applicant is deemed eligible for admission as a Founding Member; or

Denied, when admission is not granted in the current review cycle.

ASHAL may, at its discretion, invite or advise an applicant to reapply in a future cycle when conditions for a stronger candidacy are identified.

Admission decisions rest solely with ASHAL’s authorized bodies.

VII — Declarations and Responsibilities

By submitting an application, the applicant:

affirms the accuracy of all submitted information;

declares that the documentation provided is truthful and verifiable;

acknowledges that ASHAL may request additional verification or documentation;

consents to institutional contact for process-related purposes;

acknowledges that submission of an application does not guarantee admission;

acknowledges that the admission decision rests solely with ASHAL’s authorized bodies;

accepts that false information, plagiarism, fraud, misrepresentation, or material omission may result in denial of the application or future institutional review.

VIII — Institutional Founding Fee

The Institutional Founding Fee is applicable only upon approval and signing of the Membership Agreement.

The fee is not required to participate in the review process.

Upon approval, the applicant acknowledges that the Institutional Founding Fee will be due as part of the formal admission process. This fee supports institutional certification, official registration, credential issuance, public profile preparation, and administrative processing required for formal induction.

Founding Members are not subject to annual dues.

IX — Institutional Recognition

Approved Founding Members may receive institutional recognition according to ASHAL’s internal standards, including certificate of induction, symbolic chair assignment, patron designation, listing in the official registry, public profile, and institutional announcement.

The nature, timing, format, and public presentation of such recognitions are subject to ASHAL’s internal procedures and institutional availability.

X — Conduct, Integrity, and Disqualification

ASHAL reserves the right to deny an application, suspend a process, revoke a pending approval, or review membership status in cases involving conduct incompatible with institutional values.

Grounds for denial or institutional review may include, but are not limited to:

falsification of curriculum vitae;

false authorship claims;

plagiarism;

fraud;

corruption;

violence;

serious ethical misconduct;

material omission;

misrepresentation of credentials;

public conduct incompatible with the dignity and reputation of ASHAL.

XI — General Provisions

Matters not addressed herein shall be resolved by ASHAL’s authorized bodies in accordance with its internal regulations, institutional standards, and mission.
